Introverts

The defining trait of an introvert is the ability to extract energy from his/her activities (incl. mental). Extraverts, on the other hand, are able to extract energy from socializing – i.e. communicating and sharing experiences with other people.

Note that these definitions don’t contradict each other. Being an introvert does not by definition involve being anti-extrovert, i.e. insensible, shy, reserved and asocial. Yet these traits are often associated with introversion, both by introverts themselves and “outside observers”.

The underlying reason for such correlation is that introverts just don’t need to socialize to get energy, so they don’t bother. They are fine sipping happiness quietly doing whatever they have an interest in. This is often aggravated by commonly inadequate parenting and even more commonly inadequate school environment.

So, if you’re e.g. suffering from excessive shyness, don’t just label yourself an introvert and call it a day. Rationalize. Face your fear, get a job for a couple months that involves lots of communication – marketing, sales, office admin will do, even part-time. You’ll just be more powerful if you’re not afraid of people.
